Benzodiazepines are a class of medications primarily used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and other conditions related to the nervous system. They work by enhancing the effects of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which has a calming effect on the brain. Common benzodiazepines include diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), and lorazepam (Ativan). While effective for short-term use, these drugs can lead to dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms when used over extended periods. Misuse of benzodiazepines, often in combination with other substances like alcohol, can increase the risk of overdose and serious health complications.
