Stimulants are a class of drugs that increase activity in the central nervous system, leading to heightened alertness, energy, and focus. They are commonly used to treat conditions like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), narcolepsy, and obesity. Some well-known stimulants include amphetamines (e.g., Adderall), methylphenidate (e.g., Ritalin), and illicit substances like cocaine and methamphetamine. These drugs work by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and norepinephrine, in the brain. While stimulants can improve concentration and mood in some individuals, they also carry the risk of misuse, addiction, and side effects such as increased heart rate, anxiety, and paranoia.
